The project ‘Recursive Volumes’ consists of a large, spatial sculpture and a series of small sculptures; all made of the same raw material: clay. The process of transforming nature, the clay earth, into a built structure can hardly be more direct. The technique requires a manual procedure of shaping the clay walls, almost as if the built space would be a vast enlargement of a piece of pottery. The small objects have the exact same shape as the large sculpture. Ten times smaller, their repetition causes a recursion within the totality of this work. This eventually implies a scaling operation that could occur infinitely. Sizes and scales of spaces and objects are inherently connected to their functionality and identity. Depending of an objects’ size, we might contribute different meanings to it. In ‘Recursive Volumes’ the small objects were eventually fired inside the built space. Its inside volume functioned as an embracing and insulating shell for the fire to take place. This was a performative act that took several days. After the burning process was over, the small clay objects were fire hardened, but also the clay space itself was transformed into a ceramic substance. The video ‘Recursive Volumes’ focuses attention on the act of creation and the process through which knowledge of the material components and their relation to nature is gained.
